The Basics

We are a notification service for home,  businesses and personal belongings. With A Watchful Neighbor, you can receive important messages about anything that happened to your home or your property. Any helpful individual who notices something concerning, is able to have a message delivered to you simply by calling A Watchful Neighbor. Whether you’re at work, on vacation, or just running errands, we will deliver important messages to you (and your backup contacts) via text, email or phone call 24/7 – 365 days a year.

 

A Watchful Neighbor is available for your house, apartment or condo, vacation home, business, rental property, car, boat, and personal property including keys, wallet, purse, luggage and electronic devices.

If you notice something that you want the home, business or property owner to know about, take note of the unique ID# on the sign, card, tag or decal. Text or call us toll-free at (855) BE-WATCHFUL, or (855) 239-2824, and tell us the message you want delivered to the owner.

It’s up to you if you want your name and contact info available to the owner. Calls can also be made anonymously.

You will have peace of mind knowing that if something happens to your home, business, or personal property, anyone will be able to inform you—even if they don’t know your contact information. Once we get the call from a concerned individual, and you’re identified as the owner of the property in our database, we will pass along the caller’s message. No, it is not. A Watchful Neighbor is a notification service. A Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program where organized groups of residents work in cooperation with law  enforcement to prevent crime and vandalism within a neighborhood.

 

They are very different, but they can complement each other and work well together in a community. If a crime does take place, anyone can call us after 911 is called. We can then notify the owner.

Wrong – you can benefit from having both. Your installed security alarm system only alerts you if something “trips” the alarm, but there are many things that can happen that won’t trip it (e.g. damage not severe enough to activate alarm or on unarmed section of property, water damage, weather emergency, etc.).

 

This is where A Watchful Neighbor can be of value.
Some alarm systems don’t go through a central monitoring station and just sound an alert. In this case, your neighbors may call the police to investigate. The police or your neighbors can then call A Watchful Neighbor to notify you so you can arrange for the alarm to be turned off. Peace can then be restored to your neighborhood.

 

When you have A Watchful Neighbor service, you’ll know about problems that may not “trip” your alarm before you return home.

No, A watchful Neighbor does not call 911. We are strictly a notification service.

 

If there is any possibility that a crime or emergency is taking place, 911 should be called immediately and without hesitation. A watchful Neighbor can be invaluable in contacting the owner after emergency authorities have been notified.

As part of your Welcome Pack, you will receive many ways to communicate to your neighbors and others in your community that you have the service. Included items depend on the subscriptions you sign up for.

  • Yard Sign: to put in a location in your yard or garden that is visible from the street. (if applicable, for homes, townhouses, businesses)
  • Window Decal: to display on a window in your home or business, wherever you choose & where it is visible (front window, garage window, etc.)
  • Window Decal: to display on the window of your car or boat. 
  • Key Tags: to attach to your keys in case they are lost.
  • Wallet/ Purse Cards: to place inside wallet or purse in case they are lost. 
  • Luggage Tags: attach to luggage or travel bags in case they are lost.
  • Neighbor Cards: to provide to your neighbors, so they know you have the service and what the service is. Simply fill in your name and address and hand them out. The cards may also serve to help your neighbors feel personally accountable to let you know when something happens.

A Watchful Neighbor is also reaching out to community organizations/workers (emergency services, postal workers, utility workers, etc.) to make them aware of the service.

The registration process and the payment process are secure. The A Watchful Neighbor website accepts secure payments via Stripe and is encrypted by SSL certificate. This is confirmed by the “https” in the URL address of our website’s pages.

 

Additionally, A watchful Neighbor will not disclose ANY of your information to any third party for marketing purposes.

Our entire Customer Support team is based in the United States. Our signs, decals, and materials are all produced in the United States.

Receiving Notifications

Notifications are delivered to you by any combination of phone call, text, or email – whichever you choose. A Watchful Neighbor also notifies backup contacts. When you register, you can give contact A Watchful Neighbor information for 2-3 individuals. Since all contacts will receive the notifications, consider including someone who does not live at the registered property. This will help to avoid a possibility that all contacts are traveling together and unreachable for the same reason.

No. We are a notification service. Once you are notified, it is up to you to handle the situation as you see fit, whether personally or through a trusted friend, neighbor, or family member.

Day AND night AND holidays we are standing by as your neighborly notification service in the event that someone needs to get an important message through to you: 24 hours/day, 365 days a year.

Since the notifications are made by any combination of text, email, or phone call to 2-3 individuals, it will be unlikely that a notification cannot be made through any of these means. A Watchful Neighbor is a neighborly notification service. We make it possible for neighbors (and others) to help each other and take steps to help eliminate any “cranky” callers.

 

Callers are informed upfront that their conversation is being recorded. Our systems capture Caller ID, voice recordings, and other data, and in any potential case of abuse, this information can be accessed.

 

Speaking directly with the caller helps to ward off any potentially “un-neighborly” messages being delivered to you. Even doing our best, we cannot verify the details of messages delivered. It would be prudent for financial and safety reasons for owners/renters to confirm the validity of messages before arranging next steps.

If our system were automated, anyone would be able to leave any kind of message easily and anonymously. That is why A Watchful Neighbor speaks “live” with the caller. We will do our best to make sure that the message we are asked to deliver to you is made with “neighborly” intent, which an automated system can’t do.

Calling In Problems/ Concerns

If you notice something that you want the home, business or property owner to know about, take note of the unique ID# found on the yard sign, cards, tags or decals on or around the property. Call us toll-free at (855) BE-WATCHFUL, or (855) 239-2824, and tell us the message you want delivered to the owner. It’s up to you if you want your name and contact info available to the owner. Calls can also be made anonymously.

It is not necessary for the caller to give their name and/or phone number, but it is recommended.

Someone who cares enough to let the property owner know that something happened to his or her property: A neighbor, passerby, member of local emergency services departments, newspaper carrier, postal worker, utility worker, social service volunteer—anyone. Everyone can be and use A Watchful Neighbor.

Our phone number, (855) BE-WATCHFUL, is a toll-free number. Cell phone callers may incur charges. Refer to your cell phone plan for specifics.

Any time anyone wants a property owner to know that something of concern happened to his or her home, business or personal property. For emergency situations, 911 should be called immediately, but A Watchful Neighbor can be invaluable in contacting the family or owner/renter after emergency service workers or authorities have been notified.  What could happen?

When an event appears to be an emergency – 911 should be called immediately. After the emergency has been addressed, neighbors, onlookers, or emergency personnel can then call A Watchful Neighbor to notify the owner.

 

A Watchful Neighbor should also not be called when someone wants to be “cranky” or “un-neighborly” with a neighbor for any reason (e.g. calling in because the neighbor’s kids are playing too loudly, the volume of music too high, etc.)

It’s the right thing to do. You will feel good because you helped a neighbor just by making a simple phone call. You don’t even have to give your name. Nobody (including you) wants to return home to an unwelcome surprise or lose something of value to them.  A Watchful Neighbor makes it possible for neighbors to look out for neighbors, while each maintaining their sense of privacy.

Although it is highly recommended to have ID# located on the A Watchful Neighbor yard sign, window decal or the full address, it may be possible to deliver your message if you have just a partial address or the homeowner’s name.

If that phone number is one of the contact phone numbers, yes, you do need to update your account information. We won’t be able to properly notify you if your contact information has changed.

To update your backup contacts, simply login to your account and click 'Orders (Contacts/ Properties)' or you can call us – day or night – at (855) BE-WATCHFUL email us at support@awatchfulneighbor.com, and we will make any changes to contact information immediately.

Here’s how to make sure that A Watchful Neighbor follows you to your new place:

  1. If you have a yard sign, pack it up along with your other belongings, and take it with you. If your new location doesn’t have a place to display your yard sign, throw it out. The yard sign is NO GOOD to anyone else but you and your registered property.
  2. Remove the decal from your window and discard it. We will send you a new one, along with new Neighbor Cards.
  3. Login to your account and fill out the Need new signage? form or you can call us – day or night – at (855) BE-WATCHFUL. Keep in mind, besides your new property’s info, you will also have to give us updated Notification Contact info (your's & others) and any changes that may have occurred. Contact info for notifications must be up-to-date at all times.

You will know that you are successfully updated in our system when you receive your new decal and Neighbor Cards. You can then display your garden sign, new decal, and pass out the Neighbor Cards to your new neighbors.

Our signage is made of very durable materials, but if they ever get damaged, marred, stolen, or become illegible for any reason, you can purchase replacement signs. Simply email us at support@awatchfulneighbor.com or login to your account and fill out this form.  Please remember that your window decals and garden sign only work for your registered property.

Other Things

A Watchful Neighbor offers families of older persons peace of mind. You will find comfort knowing that, if ever necessary, anyone can get a message to you concerning your loved one.

 

When something really troublesome or life-threatening happens, 911 (emergency services) should be contacted immediately. After the situation is addressed, anyone can then call A Watchful Neighbor. We will notify you (and other contacts), wherever you are.
We will also deliver a message to you if behaviors that are troubling (but not life threatening) are observed by a caring neighbor or someone who regularly sees your older family member (postal, utility, social service workers, etc.)

Currently the service is available in the United States only. There are, however, plans to expand outside of the United States in the future.

The Welcome Package is sent to the Shipping address that you provide. If no shipping address is provided, the package will be sent to the Billing address provided. 

No. Once you register with A Watchful Neighbor, have your signage in place, and communicate to your neighbors that you have the service, you don’t have to do anything else except update your account if your property’s info changes or the info for the 2-3 contacts you have registered ever changes.

 

Also, you’ll need to renew your service each year.

A Watchful Neighbor signage is NOT ADVERTISING, where community rules like that sometimes apply. Explain that the yard sign is similar to a sign for a security alarm company or invisible pet confinement system, which are probably allowed. The service is all about neighbors helping neighbors and promoting a sense of community. Our signs can also act as a deterrent to criminal activity, since the feeling of “neighbors looking out for neighbors” may stop such behaviors.

 

If after explaining this to your town officials or homeowner’s association they still won’t allow you to display the notification garden sign or decal, you can STILL benefit from and use A Watchful Neighbor. The notification service will work for you if you hand out your Neighbor Cards and spread the word that you have the service. The more people who know you have the service, the more people will know to have an important message delivered to you when needed—even without a sign or decal displayed.

Many apartments do not have a place to display yard signs. Some may not have a visible window to display a decal. A Watchful Neighbor still works without them.

 

Apartments, condos and businesses get decals that can be placed on their front door (or window). Give the Neighbor Cards to the neighbors around you and spread the word that you have A Watchful Neighbor. The more people who know you have the service, the more people will know to have an important message delivered to you when needed. It is also recommended that you give a Neighbor Card to your Building Manager or Superintendent.

 

Residents or visitors will tell them if something happens. Our service also provides a way for these building employees to get your approval prior to gaining access to your apartment in the case of emergencies or for normal repairs.

When you register your business and you have a place to display a yard sign, be sure to let us know by selecting the box  to receive a yard sign at checkout.

If you'd like to receive a yard sign for your Garden Apartment or Condo, purchase the Single Family, Townhouse or Vacation Home service at checkout instead of the Apartment/ Condo service. 

A Watchful Neighbor decals and yard signs will only work for properties registered with A Watchful Neighbor. Simply putting a decal on another home, car or boat is useless, since that property is not in our database.
